How Does the New Mustang Compare In Crash Test Ratings?

Mustang Small Overlap Crash Testing

When it comes to picking out a new sports car, the things we look for are obvious. It has to be fast, have great handling, and it’d better look just as fast sitting still as it does when blasting down the highway. Fuel economy, emissions, and safety ratings fall to the low end of the “important” side of the equation, but the IIHS wants to bring safety back to the forefront in a big way. So they decided to perform full testing on the big three muscle cars on sale today to see how they compared. They rounded up a new Camaro, a new Mustang, and they even invited the Challenger, and the results speak for themselves.

The Mustang scored the best and was just one small score improvement away from nabbing a Top Safety Pick. You know, those things that Honda and Toyota shout about so much in their boring sedan commercials. The Camaro came in second place due to its lower roof strength scores and its lack of any crash avoidance technology. The Challenger performed as poorly in these tests as it does on the handling course, and it came in third. In fact, in one test they had to disassemble the crash dummy to get it out of the car. Not good.

The big question here is about how this might affect your decision to buy a car later. Now that you know the Mustang is the safest muscle car model out there, are you more likely to buy another one later? Are you happy you bought the original pony car over one of the other two? Are you immediately going to call your Challenger-driving friends and tell them to buy a bubble-wrap suit so they have some extra crash protection?
