No, you could just glop it on, then wipe it down with a wet rag before it dries and it will look perfect...

Not if you fill the holes from the "bottom side" i.e. once you pop the plugs in, open your trunk and apply the sealer from underside.

Yes if you try you can make it perfect by going from underneath. But me being the one that drills holes, bashes parts with a hammer etc.. I just put on clear silicone and stuck it in. There is good reason I dont go to car shows..
