I know that there a clips out there for a lot of the existing detectors that clip onto the visor and then you slide the detector into it. Dunno about models that have it built in, though.

And technically, I think it's actually better for it to be in the low center of your windshield for detection... At least I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. ^^;

I personally plan on grabbing the Beltronics rx65 at some point, especially having just gotten that ticket last week. ^^;

I've never had a radar detector, so please pardon my ignorance. Are radar detectors illegal in any states? Even if they're not, do you think they affect the likelihood of the cop's giving you a ticket when he walks up and sees it right there on your dash?

How do the detectors detect the radar before the cop gets a reading on your speed? Is it usually just a couple seconds advance notice, or can you slow down gradually?

Do the detectors beep? Flash? All I know is that Valentine has arrows!

Thanks for enlightening this detector newbie!

IMO as a traffic cop.....

Radar detectors do work in many cases IF the police are using radar. I have one installed in my patrol car that is very high tech. I can shoot cars traveling towards me from front or back, travelling ahead of me in the same direction, travelling behind me in the same direction etc etc. I think the last time I turned it on was when it was installed.

For the most part, at least in the area I'm in, we use laser. For those that don't know, basically laser is a handheld cordless unit that allows me to stand outside of my car (or sit in it of course) and basically look through a heads-up display that has a laser dot in the center. First thing we do is visually estimate the cars speed and then use the laser device to confirm the speed. For those that have laser detectors, by the time the word 'laser' flashes on the unit it's too late. There are laser jammers but I've never seen one that works. One of my neighbors, a pro-ball player, used to have a lamborghini and he spent a fortune on a laser jamming system. I showed him in about 3 minutes that it doesn't work.

As the previous post mentioned, if I see a detector there certainly wont be a reduction on the ticket. My favorite line that often gets a nervous laugh when I walk up to the car is "how is that laser detector working out for ya". I had a guy last week laugh and say he would take it out and urinate on it if I didn't write him a ticket!!!

Check out http://www.radarbusters.com/ ... i've been reading this website for years on radar detectors ... heck i've been using radar detectors since they've first come out (when fox was still making them ... if people remember that brand) ... and truthfully if you read this site you will get a listing of the best radar detectors to buy. The guy who does the tests on this website used to be a cop himself ... and is basically out to just help the everyday consumer ... and he does sell the products on the websites. Also there is a laser jammer that he confirms works 100% ... it is an active jammer ... only active jammers work .. those rocky mountain ones are junk (passive jammer) ... if you ever buy a jammer you have to use active ... you will never win with passive. Anyways ... you will get the idea once you read the site. As for the jammer i intend on buying ... here's the link on the website http://www.radarbusters.com/products...er/default.asp ... notice that looking at it you must attach modules to the front of the vehicle ... and they can be no further than 18 inches from the headlights and the license plate, since they are what the cops are trained to aim at. Now if you watch the video on this jammer you notice they use a corvette, which is notorious for hard aiming (cause they have no visible headlights), just a license plate to aim at. So that makes me a little lerious on the whole 18 inch rule on the modules ... (cause they could have put the modules around the plate and that's it) ... but the jammer seems to be legit. I mean this is the first jammer that is confirmed to work completely, and the site has never really steered me wrong.

Here's a little write-up I did on the Beltronics V995 (which is what I have.) I'm pretty happy with it:

BTW, I know they're illegal in Virginia and a couple of other states (I think VT as well, but don't quote me on that) but most places they are allowed.
