As Birdieman4 said, extended warranties prices are like the sticker price. You can haggle on this price as well. When we bought my wife's 2003 Mercury Mountainer, we were almost done with the deal and I got the 5 year, 75k mile warranty thrown in for $200.
I will say that I have not had to use the warranty yet. The car has 67k miles on it and has never been back to the dealership for any repair work.

www.fordesp.com
5 year/ 100,000 mile
PowertrainCARE $897
BasicCARE $970
ExtraCARE $1351
PremumCARE $1649
I paid $800 for 6 yr/75000 ExtraCARE - full price $1175.
Negotiate. I told them I'd finance through them ONLY if they gave me warranty at $700. I had ELoan Powercheck ready to go if they said no. They offered $900, I said $800 - done. This was after getting the car at invoice.

I've bought the extended on my last three cars/trucks... IMO...not worth it. Most extended warranties don't cover the stuff you really need covered, like a clutch or brakes. I'm thinkin about getting a refund on my wife's 06 escape warranty. It was around 2K and since It's still under factory warranty it's not a problem.
If you do get it..the Ford ESP IS THE BEST ONE. Free rentals and everything. Oh and you don't pay ANYTHING out of pocket. Dealer covers all the repairs, minus the deductible. No hasseling with 3rd party warranties that "reimburse you". You also get a free loaner car whenever you take your car in even for routine maintenance with the ESP.

i bought it at first then cancelled in 30 days and got full refund.
couldnt buy something that wasnt usable for the first 3 years anyways.
anyways, you can always buy one before your 3 year warranty expires. this way you have a couple of years of history. if you had a lot of warranty work done then get it, otherwise save it.

Remember..extended warranties are negotiable. You can get them to lower the cost...there are times on some models where the dealer will throw the extended warranty for free. So negotiate. Also..try this. I have GIECO and when I notified them of my pending purchase they informed me that as part of my coverage they included an extended warranty that had a $250 deductible. Even the "Paper man" at the dealership was stunned by that one. The Gieco ex warr was 7 years. So there are ways to accomplish the same thing. Personally I never get the dealer ex warranty, But thats me.

depends on what the warranty covers. If it covers just mechanical failures, then I'd so no, you got robbed. I got one for 6/120,000 that covers any kind of mechanical failure for $850. If it includes routine maintenance, then that might be a bit better.

In the past I never bought the extended warranty because I never could really afford it. Now that I can afford it I have gotten the warranty on my last two cars. To me, It's worth the few extra bucks a month for the piece of mind. I may never use it, but it's like insurance, you hope you never have to use it, but when you do, you can damn well bet your are going to be GLAD you had it!

Do NOT purchase the extended warrany if you plan on modding the car.
I purchased the "all inclusive" warranty when I bought my GT. Now I want to start adding things, replacing parts, etc. and my dealership said they would not cover the replaced parts or anything that happens with regard to the aftermarket part. They do work with me when I need work done, but in my opinion, if you want to make the car faster your money will be better spent on the car, not the warranty.

DO WHAT Immmmm SAID
But, If you drive lets say a 100 miles a day where you would eat up the 36000 warranty quickly.
Then the Extended Warranty might be worth it

Ford increases powertrain warranty
Change covers 2007 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury vehicles
Amy Wilson | | Automotive News / July 13, 2006 - 1:16 pm
DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. is adding two years to the powertrain warranty of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles for the 2007 model year.
Ford executives are telling dealers about the warranty enhancements in teleconferences that began at 1 p.m. Thursday.
The Ford and Mercury brand powertrain warranties will be extended to five years or 60,000 miles, says a source. The powertrain coverage was for the same term as the three-year, 36,000-mile, bumper-to-bumper warranty for those brands.
The Lincoln brand powertrain warranty is being stretched to six years or 70,000 miles. It previously mirrored Lincoln's four-year, 50,000-mile, bumper-to-bumper warranty.
Ford is not changing the bumper-to-bumper warranties at this time.
Free roadside assistance will be offered for the length of the bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties. Roadside assistance previously only lasted as long as the bumper-to-bumper warranties.
The enhanced warranties will be honored on all 2007-model-year vehicles, including those already sold to customers.
The moves are a way to allay quality concerns and offer more perceived value to customers. Dealers have pushed for such enhancements, and it's a tactic Ford Motor has used in the past.
In 2002, the company began offering five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain coverage on the Ford Focus, which was plagued by quality glitches in its first few years.
Ford also offers a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty on its 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine. Under its new program, Ford will eliminate a $100 deductible attached to that diesel engine warranty.
