Here you can see where I installed mine. Just remove the plug from the crossover, drill and tap. I used a file to file the two sides of the plug flat so I could get a wrench on it. That's all there is to it!

First, it is on the wrong side of the water flow. You are measuring the water tempature out of the radiator there. You need to do it on the other side where water exits the engine.
Second, that is the air bleeder valve for your cooling system. That "plug" as you call it is meant to be removed so that you can bleed the air out of your cooling system if you ever have to drain it for any reason. Otherwise you will get steam pockets in the system.
