Don't take two spots or park diagonally. It's illegal first of all and sorry, but it does make you look like a *****!
How is that illegal if it's a privately owned parking lot?

Is it illegal for me to park in the center of my two car wide driveway? Of course not. I could park sideways on my lawn if I wanted.

On private property there are only two things you can get busted for in your car, reckless driving and DUI, both of which are criminal offenses, not traffic violations. A cop can't bust you for rolling through the stop sign in the walmart parking lot, it's not a public road. He could try and argue the reckless/careless thing but wouldn't bother. There are some grey areas where the lot actually is publically owned, and the signs are there for a reason, so it's common sense to obey them, but my point is that traffic law ends at the curb.

This is why us country boys all learned to drive by 12, and it was completely legal for me to run around our property in our beater field truck to gather campfire wood, or pick off gophers.

Of course if you're parking on a city street it could be illegal, would depend on the city/county's bylaws.

It does make you look like a *****, though, and it's just asking for someone to mess with you. Just because the lot was empty when you went into the mall doesn't mean it will be when you leave. Door dings come out easy, a good deep keying is forever (until paint, that is).

I would guess that most keyings or vandalisms are from somebody you know and PO'ed, though. Most people, even punk kids, are smart enough not to mess with a strangers car, you never know if it's some 6'8" beast who just got out of the joint for beating his own father to death.

If you want to keep people from messing with your stuff, the best advice I have is "dont be a dick".
