F body is a high 12/low 13 second car, s197s are high 13s, and for the trannys on the fbodys, the 4L60-E is just as quick as the stick, change the gears they will be faster, add a kit and a high stall they will blow them away
i ran mid 13s with my stone stock S197 and with DRs i am at low 13s easily.. s197s are not high 13s that is just avarage drivers.. LS1 avarage driver mid 13s!
I thought LS1's could break into 12's stock?

you are right.. but you gotta be pretty good driver.. avarage driver = mid 13s!! at byron last saturday i didnt see any stock trans am hit mid 13s seriously.. even LS2 GTO's best run was 13.8..

s197 avarage driver = high13s - low 14s-- good driver low-mid 13s (on street tires)
LS1 avarage driver mid 13s (maybe kinda low 13s) --- god driver very low 13s, very high 12s

yea, I saw a stock 06 Gt (screaming yellow) run 13.4 stock on stock tires. I personally have never seen a LS1 break into 12' stock, I have heard that a ton of times though.

i would have been 13.4s too but unluckly on that run i missed a gear but oh well!! about LS1s i have never seen either but i have heard LS1tech.com's moderator NINEBALL ran 12.8 on a stone stock LS1 (might be with DR, i dont know about that)

With DR's a S197 GT could hit 13.1-13.2. So LS1 is not gods car after all [8D]

An LS1 is NOT a superior power plant. Cast iron block, pushrod design, only two valves per cylinder. The ONLY reason it makes more hp and torque is because it's a lot bigger. Regardless, it's torque output is impressive and I wouldn't mess with an LS1 unless I had quite a few improvments.

I wonder how much HP the 3v would have if it had an extra litre of displacement...

If Ford made a mod engine with the same displacement as an LS1 it would defintely make more power and torque than an LS1. Overhead cam means much less internal friction due to fewer moving parts. The Europeans learned more than 50 years ago that OHC is vastly superior.
A good comparson is the 5.3 liter V8 GM is using in the Limpala. Even with 5.3 liters of displacment it's hp putput as almost exactly the same as our 4.6 GT engines. What's really impressive though is that the GM 5.3 doesn't make any more torque than the Mustang GT engine which really says a lot for the Ford.
The ONLY thing the GM 5.3 has over the Ford 4.6 GT is engine is that the toque comes in at a lower rpm but then they hampered that engine's ability by putting it into a cheap FWD chassis that can't handle the power. They torque steer and spin really bad. The engine completely overwhelms the FWD setup and it's pretty much useless at low speeds.

LS1s are faster than s197 but not much.. i live LS1 engines more than our 4.6l because if you touch those engines, you gain HP and with drag radials, they will fly.. they need traction!!
