GM SUCKS!! all their cars looks the same inside!!!! but anyways to compare... I own a 06 mustang V6 and I own a 00 Honda Civic EX (im selling the civic) If I were ever to race my two cars, the civic would get off the line quicker, but then my mustang would completely rape the civic... and its only the V6, try having a V8 monster, you will be able to dominate all (non turbo) V6 cars, and some of the (non turbo) V8 cars... once you get to drive and own your mustang, you will never look at any other car the same...

+1 Well said
If your friend is a car is a car guy you won't talk any sense into him he know very little about cars unless he reads it or sees it on TV. Most media hammer american car makers lately. As far as you wanting one these are very nice cars, built well, handle well and are just fun to own.... Good luck with the tungsten GT its a great color and a great car.

Sounds like your "friend" has a case of sour grapes with Ford products....he's entitled to his opinion(I think any FWD American car is a POS-just my opinion). If you want to examine reliability, just look around you. How many V-8 Mustangs are still in the road? Nearly all of them! Yes the S197 is an all new design, the engine is new too even though the architecture's the same. I would avoid '05s, having owned one, it was great to drive, but little recalls here, little recalls there...first year of an all new design, usually something suffers. I now have an '06 GT(Tungsten-outside/Charcoal-inside) and I am just so pleased by improvements Ford has made in just 1 year to the car. Having come from owning Nissan trucks for over 10 years, I must say that my '05 didn't have any major mechanical issues(just nagging little things-battery going weak, trunk trim coming loose, front strut mount bearing clicking lock to lock, gas filler issue), my '00 Frontier Crew Cab had a faulty injector issue for several months(techs finally figured out the intake manifold had a crack) and front suspension issues(loose sway bar mounts) and it left me stranded once(injector gone bad) and that was all in the first 12 months of ownership. I would heartily recommend a new Mustang to anyone...and take your friend for a ride to shut him up.

Just to counter the Explorers are **** sentiment that seems to be going around, mine has been the most reliable machine a man could hope for. It fell fifteen feet off of a cliff onto its nose, and I drove it home. A hundred foot pine tree hit it in the C pillar, and it needed no repairs. It's been hit by a Suburban and Ranger, no damage to the explorer, 1,500 to the suburban and 500 to the ranger. It has well over 100,000 miles, and it needed a starter replaced, that's it.
Rangers are known to be one of the most reliable cars out there, and since that's essentially what an explorer is, the reliability should be somewhat similar.

NOT MY WORDS!!!

I just got done arguing with an old friend of mine about Ford being not sh*t.

I was defending Ford because i've seen the consumer reports and Focus' and Mustang V8's are actually very reliable. He argues that all Fords are crap because he's had one in his family since 2000 (an Explorer).

....

-Jun-
Operative term being 2000 _Explorer_

It's not a car. Trucks drive like crap; a ford explorer is an SUV, near the bottom of the SUV heap at that. You've done the research. You know the V6 has had a lot of problems, that the V8 is more reliable and if you've checked out Car & Driver, the Mustang GT made car & drivers muscle car of the year. Crisp handling, plenty of power. It's a good car. Crap doesn't make Car & Driver's car of the year in any category. Don't confuse a low end truck with Ford's flagship sport vehicle.

'nuff said. The GTO is a little faster. So what? It's a lead sled, the base costs 6k more than the base GT, and it handles like crap on anything but a straight away. Unless you plan to drag race it doesn't much matter. The GT also looks a hell of a lot better and is a way cooler car. When all that plastic junk is falling off the GTO, the mustangs will be busy becoming modern classics. I guarantee a GTO won't still hold appeal in 10 years.

Granted I've been driving mine for a week, but it's not falling apart already. My mom's Gran Prix was already back to the dealer by this time with a dome light filling up with water. She repeated the trip 8x before they fixed it.

Granted, no American car is a BMW, but the GT is something special.

I have given people drives in my car that think mustangs are worthless and they say afterwards, I want one what did you pay for it?
Funny how that works isn't it

Guys, this is not an issue of Power or performance. Those aspects i'm already sold on. Hell, back when i was a die hard import enthusiast i test drove the Stang GT and it slammed me into the seat. I want to know how it fares day to day. I want to know if i put $28K down on something i'm not going to have minor annoyances and the car being in the shop often. Back when i had my 00' Civic Si I drove it for 6 years without a SINGLE problem. It had never been back to the Honda dealer from where it came except after i ran the fender into a Ford truck ( hehe ). It was virtually bulletproof. I would like to repeat that experience, except this time in somethign a bit more powerful and a bit more Tungsten.

Which may explain why a non-performance oriented Ford maybe problematic. Ford cars that are engineered for sport seem to be more reliable for some reason. [:-]
I consider myself a loyal Ford person and I definitely do not feel that statement is true.

I have owned or owned
85 Mercury Lynx
89 Mustang GT. (currently restoring)
89 Ford Escort
92 F-150
93 Aerostar
95 F-150 (RIP Thanks to wife)
97 F-150
97 Taurus
2001 F-250
2001 Windstar
2005 Mustang GT

I did not have any real problems with the ones I owned and the ones I still own. Seven of the cars have or had well over 100,000 miles before I got rid of them. Some I still own the 89 Mustang has over 217,000 on it not by me but is still running good but not for long I'm getting ready to totally restore it. You can have your lemons with any car you buy. So far the 05 has not caused me any major problems. I would not hesitate to buy another 05 it has had a few bugs but hey it is the first year of the S197.

The interior is insanely comfy and functional I have had no probelms with my car yet and have not heard of any from anyone else.
There is nothing wrong with the car in my opinion...hmmm it could use more hp...hahah but 300 is good enough maybe wider tires in the rear because they let loose when you give it to her, but it does have tc! nothing wrong with the car man

what does he thinks compares to the mustang anyways? because in my opinoin when it comes to price there is no car that does...
My friend knows nothing of the mustang, and doesnt care about Power. He's one of those "a car is only for transportation" people. Which may explain why a non-performance oriented Ford maybe problematic. Ford cars that are engineered for sport seem to be more reliable for some reason. [:-]

Can you elaborate on the experiences of these people you've given rides to? And does the change of heart only correlate to the impressive power? What made them decide to buy one? As a person who's owned 2 BULLET PROOF honda civics i'm extremely critical when it comes to reliability. I love the Stang for it's looks, power and sound but that is only a portion of actually owning one.
I have owned a bullitproof integra, my friend owns a bullitproof CRX and I have a friend with a Skyline...These cars are not reliable compared to a mustang TRUST ME!!
It also depends on how you drive, I babied mine for the first 3000km's now I drive it a little harder The car drives better now than it did when I got it...

Since I am a former automotive salesperson and all my soldiers like to get my take on the deals they are trying to get on various vehicles I can tell you this.

As far as quality goes i really see no single company jump leaps and bounds over any other company in terms of fit and finish and reliability. Wheter its 15 to 20k or 21 to 35k or 35+ each company makes decent cars and trucks and yes sometimes the human equasion steps in and a lemon is rolled off the assembly line. Nowadays recalls are usually handled decently and you can always find a dealer who will work with you on little issues. I buy Fords because I like them and have always belived Ford Mustangs and trucks are the best made. Just do some searching around on some non profit groups to see what cars are doing good or bad.
