Nice mix of two competing series...lol Sorry, the geek in me surfaced for a moment there...
LOL.... I was wondering if someone would catch it.....

I've opened it up a bit more now (4500-5500) and I still can't find my eyebrows

I understand the tune, and see CAI pop up all the time on these boards, but I'd be lying if I said I know what it is.

From what I gathered my first few mods should be a K/N filter? some kind of chip?

Whats the tune do for me exactly.

is there anyplace on here that gives a list of common mods and average cost?

I don't want to get into anything major until I get the feel for the basics first, so gear kits and chargers and such are out for at least a year.

I'm interested in the tuning though. Do I need special gauges?

I'm trying to learn it all from reading, but theres so much to absorb. One doesn't go from crawling along in POS 4 cyl beater to a Mustang and then a suped up Mustang in a month. (at least I don't think it would be wise for me to do so).

So I guess I want to start with small mods that require little shop time (to early for me to suffer with seperation anxiety for to long) and are in the low price range so I can space them out a little bit.

Any suggestions?

You have the right idea, take it slow. Learn what you can do and what you can afford and what you want to accomplish.

I wanted a little more performance at the start so I got a Granitelli CAI (Cold Air Induction system) that does not need a tune. I fear for my warrantee if I mess with too much. It gives my car a nice boost in performance as is. As far as body and interior your not at risk of losing warrantee coverage. They say Ford can't refuse warrantee work unless the mod caused the problem. Some dealers are hard to deal with though. I may change my mind when I get the need for more speed.

Keep watching the daily posts and do searches on questions you have. There is a huge amount of info available. be careful though and don't believe everything you read. There are lots of conflicting opinions.

So get searching and good luck.

Ah thanks for the tip on the CAI. In looking up K & N parts I see two different easily done and affordable mods.

A K&N CAI (I think thats what it is) for about $250 and just the filter itself for $50 or so.

Questions then: Do I get both? Does the CAI include the $50 filter also or are they two seperate filters? The cost isn't anything prohibitive, would a newb like me be able to install the CAI myself.

Hell I might be doing my first mod this weekend!

[sm=welcomesign.gif] There is no turning back now...you WILL fall victim to the mod bug. Once bitten there is no cure. lol. I would suggest keep checking the forums for different mods. Most common are 4.10 or 3.73 gears, CAI and tune, exhaust, exterior mods, and for some super or turbochargers. Have fun!

The amazing thing about this all, is my wife, who knows I always wanted a mustang, came home on friday and said, lets go get you a new car. And by monday I was driving it home. Granted we don't have kids yet, but damn what a woman!

You're a lucky man!

There are better cold air intakes out there than K&N but thats just my personal opinion. I bought axle back's first and then a CAI. Later on about 3 months later i got a throttle body spacer and a tuner. Now i am about 1500 away from my turbo kit!! Your sickness will evolve into an obsession.
