Go for it, given the loyalty you speak of here I would tell him that you appreciate him doing this for such a reasonable price and if it runs a bit higher to get it done properly, that you are happy to pay the additional amount required.

You really don't want him to rush or feel he is making nothing on the effort or possibly losing money on it. You're about a grand too low on the price so if he finishes up and says it took longer and/or the materialsran more than he figured, that $600 would make it right, just be thrilled that yougot the job done for about half price. JMHO
