downshifting is so hard to master...at least for me...every once in a while i get a smooth downshifting by blipping the throttle, but mostly not...i guess it seems like its instinct, i guess you can closely watch the rpms and try to match it but its more fun to try to get a feel for it. in any case, driving a manual is a blast and the mustang gt is one of the most fun cars ive ever driven. downshifting to 3rd at 60 mph and then going up to 90 in no time is a ton of fun....the sound of the v8 is absolutely intoxicating

Are you saying this isn't as easy on the transmission as double-clutching in these cars?
Yup. There isn't anything wrong with NOT double clutching, but if you don't, then you'll have to wait for the input shaft to spin up before it will go into gear or force it. Forcing it is what is bad for the synchros. Though being a little rough now and then probably won't have any noticible effect. I'm not trying to say that you're sending your transmission to an early grave, thats just not true unless your brutal with it.

Next time you are coming to a stop, downshift into first (no double clutch). You can hear it spin up the input shaft as you press it into first. The harder you push the faster it will sync speeds, but only a gentle pressure is needed.

BTW, I mean at like 5-10 miles an hour, not 50 :-)

Yeah, I have noticed the 1st gear sound. Thanks for the explanation!
