about 400 rpms, you will loose 2 mpg going from stock gears to 4.10s, if anything, milage in the city will improve

Good luck with this.....LOL [8D]

Not being mean here, but for over a month now I have been researching the 4:10 gear set-up in an auto with multiple oppinons and multiple facts and not just from guys on this site, but other sites as well. I have alsocontacted atleast six different "performance" shops that work on the S197 and I have also contacted Motive gear and Ford racing. A few shops have told me go with 3.73s a few other shops have told me go with 4.10s, and a few others have told me to stay withwhatI have, being the the 3.31s. The best thing about this is"ALL" these shops have different Technical reasons why I should go with the gear they suggest, inwhich they all contradict eachother. So I have decided to hold off on gears until futher research. But I do know for now, you need to know more about your choice for gear selection besides RPM difference, including...

Application- Street and/or Strip
Daily driving- short and long distances
Tire size upgrades- now or in the future
Other possiblefutureMods

Ihave an auto and will probably be going with 3:73's after talking with the local shops it seems to be the best way for me to go.

Quick S, it's not that all those people are giving the wrong answer. It sounds like you are trying to get someone to tell you what you will like. Gear selection is very much a personal preference. There are several factors that will determine what gear you want to use in your car like; daily driver, quarter mile or road race and howoften you would do each, if a street only car what type of roads and terrain, how much you care about mileage vs performance, yada yada yada...

I think it is funny to read about people considering gear selection and they get all worked up about it running at 3500rpm at highway speeds. Heck, I like to keep mine up there, that's where the power is! I have 4:10s in my auto along with a 3,000rpm stall converter and LOVE it! Nobody can tell you what are the "correct" gears to buy. All they can do is help you make up your mind and offer recommendations based on what your preference is. -Joe

I dont drive my stang alot. But when I do I like having fun and normally go for a nice road cruise.I like Jbailer have purchased the TCI 3000 stall. I haven't installed it yet. From my post you can see I've done some engine mods. But now want to focus on drivetrain. My Gt has a 355 gear so I dont know if a 373 will make much difference. Do you think I'm crazy, I want my local ford dealer to install the 410 gear. It's a Ford racing certified dealer. The issue is I would like to go with a 390 gear but Ford doesn't offer it. The aluminum driveshaft is on order.

I commute 50 miles each day in mine. With the 4.10s I spin under 3k at 80mph, however, I do have 28" tires out back. I held our for a year and a half before doing this, wish I hadn't waited so long. The pickup out of the hole is incredible.

3k at 80 MPH with Im hoping you meant 18 tires in back makes my decision easier. I also have 18's .Thanks also for the Richmond gear website. I dont know the overdrive ratio ?

I am thinking about doing the same thing (going to the 4.10 gears) with my GT which is an auto. What the heck is a stall converter and how does it help?
