Default Antenna Base Removal

Has anyone attempted to remove and paint the antenna base (black trim)? I was just wondering if there are any concerns I need to know about before I attempt this. I just dont want to start wrenching on the top side of the antenna and run the risk of it falling into the fender area and not being able to get to it if it falls down into the fender. I did a visual and not much access to the area from behind the wheel well inside the engine compartment. The reason I want to do this is primarily for the same reason some of you are painting your mirrors, want it to blend in with the body. I also plan on painting my windsheild washer nozzels as well. That won't be as difficult as I know already how to remove them.

It looks like the one I had on my f-150 if it is the same style it has a plastic cap that snaps on and off. Under the cap are 2 or 3 screws that hold the base to the fender. I used a butter knife to pry the cap off to get to the screws that had come loose. Be careful when prying the cap off cause it is easy to damage.

The base is so big that I don't know if painting it white is a good thing, gonna be weird (and big) if color keyed. ...anyway, the three screws under the cap are torx (I think they were 20's, not sure now) They appeared to be LokTite'd in though. ...hard to imagine them being loose because they arerather tough to get out w/o rounding them off. Get a brand new torx head adapter (Craftsman); put it on a 1/4 socket/ratchet; press down firmly but not "killer" so as to dent your fender, and gradually apply pressure. ...good luck man!

The piece is connected to the antenna wire, and the only disconnect point is under the passenger seat; right before it connects to the head unit. It's kinda disappointing. I damaged mine by trying to use one of those "screw outs" I broke my antenna off and yeah... just one big mess. I'd like to take it off completely, and get the hole filled/painted.

I got rid of the antenna also. It was just too big and ugly. I went with the Metra amplified interior antenna that mounts on the windshield. Here's some instructions on how to do it.
