Because if your engine should stall when you're at 80 you will have no power to your brakes, steering and whatever else. If you can't get back into DRIVE or gear you will really be up a creek!

Does that only apply to automatics?
Because I'm always in nutral with my manual Mustang GT. Including down hill.
