Default Possible starter or ignition switch problem?

My car does this every now and then as of late...when i turn the key to just engage the battery (Guess im used to letting the glow plug warm up on the diesle) it makes a noise near the driver side...u most likely hear it as I do in most cars...but sometimes when i do this the sound is overly loud and long and i can tell the starter is going to act weird again. I try to turn on the car and turns over for a long time and finally starts. Never on a warm engine. Can anyone help me understand what might be causing this?
