Codes are stored in flash memory, so even if the fault light clears, it'll be held for later recovery.
I had to take my old BMW into the shop for a new O2 sensor and they ran the tester on it to check codes. I had 26 of them in history
ABS Sensor dead, Eelctric window fault, convertible roof motors out of alignment and oh, so many more. Apparently the car had all these previous faults corrected but the codes were never cleared LOL
