Default SCT Tuner questions

OK, I'm at work, attempted to search for my answers, and already threw one keyboard across my office. Now that I'm back up and running, I have a couple quick questions.

1. I had a Check Engine Light come on this morning in my 98 Explorer and was wondering if I can use the X-cal2 to check the code?

2. Do I need to return the mustang to stock before I plug it into the Explorer if it works?

3. How exactly do I check the code? All I did when I got the CAI + Tuner was plug in, and upload the tune.

Thanks in advance for your help!
