I have the drop in K&N in my stock air box, but I can't compare it to stock. I changed out the filter as soon as I drove in home. From what I have read it gives you a little more, but nothing you can feel seat of the pants. One thing I read is it helped the air to fuel ratio. That is about all I can tell you.

Has anyone invested in the K&N drop in filter for the stock air box? Any difference in performance?

I didn't want to mess with a CAI, and the accompanying expense/ warranty issues, even after they replaced my engine.
The K&N filter is thinner, but I seem to notice a little better mpg. But no noticable power diff.
My stock filter was a mess!
And no, I hadn't been doing any offroading, just had about 20,000 miles on it... if it hadn't been changed before.

20,000 on an air filter, No Way man. You got to change it earlier then that.

Depends on the enviroment and how many cars you
follow down dirt roads daily. But 20K seems a little
long.

I only go 5K on air filters with all other cars. The stang has a CAI though...

Anyways, everything I've read about KN drop-ins suggests they hurt gas mileage and performance. There has been a few educated discussions on this in the forums... May want to search up on it.

If anyone does try and change their fuel filter you will leak gas from the filter as lines are removed. I would say 2 ounces or so. I had an old towel under the car soaking it up. Make sure car is not hot in case any vapors or liquid ignite near exhaust
