Autos. Do you upshift?
What kind of racing?
If you're talking staight line then let the auto shift for you. If you use a tuner and replot the shift points it might give you an even bigger edge. Manually shifting an automatic will be slower than the computer and opens up room for a mistake.
You shouldn't get into 5th, or maybe even 4th, if you are doing a 1/4 mile, so it might not matter if you turn off overdrive.
As far as racing where there are corners... forget about it! Difficult to shift accurately added to the delay in downshifts will hurt you too much. I shift manually on familiar roads when I'm wanting a performance type run, but any Mustang with a manual will blow me away!

Orion is right on. Just leave it in drive and stomp on the gas when you want to go. If you have a tune, reload your tune every couple of weeks to keep the throttle hesitation to a minimum.Good luck!
