Thier are pros and cons to both, built in is more convenient and and a nicer finished look. Also you can get a better head unit of of the deal. The cons are price, installiation costs (if you don't do it your self), theft risk and it isn't portable. I went built in because my mustang is my daily driver and I plan on keeping it. I will also pull my d3 out when I trade the car in and put the skipper 500 back in. Who ever gets it will get a almost new one. I havent had any issues so far with my d3. The navigation works well (doesn't always pick the fastest route but it gets me were I need to go). The audio features are great. I love the ipod interface and xm interface. The bluetooth works great as well. I have also used tomtom's and they work well also and I think they even give you free updates.

I have the Magellan Roadmate 3000T from AAA. I have two cars, so a portable is great for me. Not very expensive and upgradeable.
