avic z1 or z2.....no question about it!!
I hope it's better than the AVIC-D3, which rocks in every way but NaviBLOWS. I know the Z2 is HD based but the mapping is the same I believe, if so, expect to make a lot of wrong turns. I like the D3iPod interface, steering controls, I have the DVD bypass the Bluetoothand my XM and XM traffic but I must say it again, the Navi BLOWS.

My D3 has this same feature except mine will often make up my speed as I go, there are times it shows me going 20 at a stop light, while stopped.
I'm going to make an appointment to get my unit replaced by something else if they can't get my Navi and this feature working properly.

I have not had any problems with the performance screen. I also have not had any trouble with the navigation telling to make the wrong turn. The only thing bad I can say about the nav has to do with how you select local POIs. You have to do a vicinity search because just looking up a POI by name will not allow you to sort by distance. It really seems like an oversight. Other than that the NAV has worked flawlessly. Then again, I rarely use it.

here is a dumb question, since I'm happy with the performance of my shaker 1000
and my budget only allows for a head unit upgrade, will the rest of my system still work with these aftermarket head units (like my subs)>?
I have the shaker 1000 and only changed the head unit and I am very happy with the performace of the subs etc.
what head unit did you go with?

How can you afford a GT but not the Z1/2 lol?
It is not a matter of afford, more of a matter of spending wisely. 1k extra because one has a built in hard drive doesn't make sense to me when you can get a ipod (plus it is a lot easier to load music onto a ipod then a z1/z2 hard drive). I would rather put the money into performance mods personally. Not to knock the z1/z2 owners because they are nice units as well I just don't want to spend 2k for a head unit. I must say the xm interface and ipod interface on the d3 are very nice as well and the buitl in xm sound so much better then my mifi did with the fm modulator (lots of interfearance on them in chicago).

Ok, that makes a lot more sense....I had the Z1 from the previous car so that was a "sunk cost" lol

Go w/ an in-dash setup please! You will not regret it. The portables are okay, especially if you use different cars quite often. But the nice big touch screen that is integrated with the dash is really the way to go. My ipod plugs directly in, charges it as well. The kenwood unit is hard drive based so no nav disc and it really seems pretty up to date as far as I know.
If you are going to keep your stang forever, then do what you want with nav systems. But, there have been those in the auto industry who are saying that having an in-dash nav system will hurt the resale and trade-in value. As "newer and better" nav units are developed, you will have "old" technology. As such, they are suggesting that you forgo the nav unit in favor of a portable unit if you typically do not hang on to your cars for a long time.

Screw trade in value...

1. I am keeping the car for a long time
2. I would pull the nav unit probably before trading in the car anyway
3. The nav unit is not going to make the car less valuable if you are trading the car or selling it within a few years because it will be better than a shaker or $300 cd player and the technology wont be that bad...

I think if someone plans on trading-in or selling within a few years that an in-dash NAV unit might increase interest in the car, and you might get a few bucks back. But after 4 years that old technology probably won't help.
I just won't pay all that money for an aftermarket system that will encourage someone to break into my car!
I can take a portable unit with me. This is another reason why the iPod is selling so well.
