I didn't even touch the tape when I removed mine.. I just let it be.. If it decided to come off with the plate- fine.. Just remember when you reinstall the plates, apply firm pressure to the whole thing and make sure to press on the place where the two sided tape is.

Interesting, mine had some tape but was still plenty sticky after a couple times removing them. I didn't have any problems with bending or breaking with the 'pull harder' method. I did wedge my fingers under there though to help pull up and spread the load.
