4.10's + auto= WOW!!!
ORIGINAL: wmtheflash
That's the best advice out there. 4.10:1 for the Manual and 3.73:1 for the automatic.
It's a ratio, so it's not hard to understand. 4.10:1 should have about 20% higher rpms that the stock 3.31:1 in an auto. 3.73:1 is about a 11% over stock.
I saw about a 10% reduction in highway mileage with 3.73:1 in my automatic, which makes sense. I'm glad that I didn't go with 4.10:1, that would mean another drop 2 mpg drop in fuel economy.
I'm not sure if the other poster lives in Texas or Kansas or another one of those flat states, but it's tough for me to get 25 mpg on the highway and I have 3.73:1. I usually end up with 24 mpg or so for most highway trips. Again, it's hilly terrain around here. Bottom line, my mileage dropped about 2 mpg on the highway.

I've heard nothing but good things about 4.10's w/ the manny. I'ts kinda on my list after a pully/fuel pump upgrade, suspension work and tires andinstalling my shift light.
I've heard 3.73's in autos are to 4.10's in mannys, and the 3.73's in my auto sn95 felt perfect -I'm kinda looking forward to it.

Ok guys I have a 3.55 now and want to upgrade so would 4.10s in a stick shift be recommended? I cant justify going from 3.55 to 3.73 for the same price almost as a 4.10 with install and parts? thoughts anyone? I know this has been talked about a million times but the debate still goes! J Remember I have FI!

So that's about right. You dropped 2-3 mpg down to 24. You would have been 26-27 like the rest of us.

To keep the peace, Ill double check my rpms and Ill report back.

I run at exactly 2000 rpms at 70 mph with my 3.31. No way is 1000 rpm difference between 3.31 and 4.10 only 1 mpg. No FREAKING way!

On one of your next trips, document what rpm your showing at 70mph. I got 3.73's and i show about 3000 rpms @ 70mph.

I was wrong. At 70mph, my seeing 2450 rpms.
The ideal gears:
Manual = 4.30:1
Auto = 4.10:1
I remember getting flack for going 4.30s a couple years ago, but it seems pretty common and acceptable now. We are doing 4.88s in an Automatic for a customer's drag build (at his request). That will be the new record for extreme gearing to my knowledge!

But if in a DD that doesn't see 50 MPH get the 4.10's or 4.30's for that matter esp if you rarely go over 50 MPH..... Really guys we are talking about the difference of 3-6 bucks at the pump for the obvious gains you get when you change your rear gears....JMO J

4.10s provide a 1 mpg drop over 3.73s and that is only on the highway, and your still not going to have the power to completey reach your top speed the only people that say 4.10s are to much are those that have never had tehm

For me, our GT burnes $210 a month in gas at todays prices. I'm looking to scrape every liltte mpg out of it that I can. Plus, there is something to be said about the engine wearing out sooner if it goes through it's live 600-700 rpms faster than one geared at 3.31. It all depends on you the driver and your life choices.

Its all about the perfomance!

I still haven't been able to beat onmy car yetbecause of the weather being so crappy but I barely notice a difference from the 3.31 while driving normal. My exhaust tone sounds a little better while cruising though.
