Default Fat Ford!!

as everyone and there grandmother knows, our s197's are too heavy...they are tank heavy...i have owned several different body styles in my years, but this is by far the heaviest gt ever made,imo......my question is, is there a real way to shave weight? not just a hood or 11lbs lighter driveshaft......what can get this car into an exceptable weight range(3200)? the weight is nice in that it drives real smoothly, but i want my gt to go on a diet.....anyone have a significantly lighter 197 and how did you do it?

the mach 1 fourm(in this site) constantly talks about the tank heaviness compared to the new gen gt
thanks

you mean the new edge gt, notr the new gen right?

anyway, an s197 is only about 50 lbs heavier than a new edge, stock for stock

its a popular misconception (especially with the fox body, sn95, and new edge drivers)

not making fun of you... its just so stereo-typical of the rest of the older body style mustang owners... I'm not sure why.

Maybe they just want one soo bad that they have to justify how theirs is so much better. [:-]

Curb weights per Edmunds:

2005 - 3450
2004 - 3347
1998 - 3227

So a total weight increase of 223 lbs from the 98 model year to now. Horsepower in 1998, 225. Horsepower in 2005, 300.

If you think the GT is tank heavy, then what is the new challenger at 4170lbs? I'm sure the new camaro will make the GT look light weight as well. You could get down 250 lbs by changing the DS, radiator support, switching to light weight racing seats, removing the back seats, removing jack/spare, removing a/c, but it would not be worth in IMHO.

These may be the heaviest mustangs but they are also the fastest, stock vs. stock.

Or you can take out your CB, take off you rebel flags, delete the dixie horn and remove your Klan outfit from the trunk.

I think the only way to make the car significantly lighter is to make it a lot smaller or to use expensive light weight materials. I doubt it can be done by a backyard mechanic with sacrificing comfort or drivability.

Its not just the Mustang, though. The market demanded larger and larger cars and the manufacturers delivered. They have gotten so big that the market has started to demand subcompact that are the same size as the old compacts. (See Honda Fit, upcoming Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, etc.)

I have been thinking about the new Ecoboost V6 that might go into the 2010 Mustang. That would be a good way to reduce weight without sacrificing power.

What would the weight savings be of an all aluminum V6 compared to the 4.6 liter?
