Most of the wieght was in added saftey features to make these cars safe for the looming domestic drivers. But with these cars you have a better platform to work with. It is very (and I mean very) difficult to get a slow *** 2v to pull a good 60', or hell look at the coin needed to get good mph in the 1/4 mile with any of the sn95 cars. Mach 1's are a big dissapointment IMO. They have 4v's but our 3v's can outperform their "lighter" mach's.

Curb weights per Edmunds:

2005 - 3450
2004 - 3347
1998 - 3227

So a total weight increase of 223 lbs from the 98 model year to now. Horsepower in 1998, 225. Horsepower in 2005, 300.
is there a realistic way to drop down to 3227 lbs....? how much did the 93 weigh?

Or you can take out your CB, take off you rebel flags, delete the dixie horn and remove your Klan outfit from the trunk.
That comment was completely uncalled for. Its rude and a completely jacka** remark.

I smell a ban coming up with that comment.

Each stock seat weighs a friggin TON! Change both seats and your car just lost around 2 tons. [8D]

edit: I meant the front seats. The back seat is light as a feather.

Tubular K-member from BMR, aluminum driveshaft, race seats, (maybe take out the back seatbut I don’t think it weighs much) I'd say you savea decent amountright there, then you could look at some light weight wheels, light weight flywheel, take off the front sway bar if you only want to go straight, this is kind of stupid but run with your gas tank 1/2 full when you want to be driving aggressively, I've though of this myself a lot and thats about as far as I would go, I like my A/C and air bags. If your looking for a really light mustang fox bodies are definatly the way to go IMO. good luck.

I have been thinking about the new Ecoboost V6 that might go into the 2010 Mustang. That would be a good way to reduce weight without sacrificing power.

What would the weight savings be of an all aluminum V6 compared to the 4.6 liter?
Not much, probably. Turbochargers require a lot of infrastructure for safe operation. The breathed on V6's will require charge coolers and plumbing for the already heavy turbos themselves. The fuel economy comes not from weight savings but less fuel usage when you stay out of the boost.

The most effective way to ditch weight on the Mustang is unsprung and rotational weight. Start with lighter wheels and tires and move your way up to driveshafts and flywheels. From here you can start taking things off of your car. Probably one of the best things you can do is replace power seats with racing buckets. If performance is what you're looking for...

... start stripping the car. A/C, interior panels, subs and speakers, sound deadening, etc. Some replacement suspension components will be lighter than the stock stamped steel units.

Honestly, there are a lot of things we can do to improve performance before serious weight reduction (though wheels/tires and racing seats would be a worthwhile upgrades). Aerodynamics, for example. Get the front end sorted out.

I think the only way to make the car significantly lighter is to make it a lot smaller or to use expensive light weight materials. I doubt it can be done by a backyard mechanic with sacrificing comfort or drivability.

Its not just the Mustang, though. The market demanded larger and larger cars and the manufacturers delivered. They have gotten so big that the market has started to demand subcompact that are the same size as the old compacts. (See Honda Fit, upcoming Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, etc.)

The day they no longer offer a v8 in the Mustang is the day I dis own Ford.

seems like aftermarket exhaust stingers will drop around 50 pounds. At least thats what it felt like when I did mine. Plus it sounds faster than before.
