I am going to be replacing my gears with 3.73's. I know its not a big step up but my friend is getting rid of his and he has a spare install kit so I figured we might as well do it. I am going to do it myself as well, shouldnt be too hard.

nice!!!! go for it man i'm just frustrated right now cause my install kit hasn't come in ans that's all i need to get started... if i don't get it by friday i'll be pissed cause next week i work all week

just make sure you have the specific tools like a dial indicator with magnetic base, a micrometer, a torque wrench that measures inch pounds and maybe a pinion depth measuring tool

understand what pinion depth (very important to get it right or you gears will whine), backlash, and running torque/preload are before you attempt it and how to measure and adjust them. there are lots of websites that explain that and www.fordmuscle.com has an awesome tutorial on how to swap one out of an 05 stang

also know how to interperet the mesh pattern

once you got all that do it!!!

here's an update

4.10 is in!!!!! took me all weekend. i drove it and there is an ever so slight whine on acceleration while driving in fifth above 2500 rpm (about 63mph) so i'm going to have to check my pinion depth. I read that the 4.10 whines but i think if you install it right it shouldn't. i ordered a 30 dollar tool that checks if you got the right shim on so I'm gonna do that next week. so far i've spent about $200 including cost of ring and pinion cause i bought a press from harbor freight to press the bearings on cause i didn;t trust using a hammer. i also bought some piping from home depot to push the bearing on

the pinion from ford had a value of 8 on it an that means you add 8 to .03 an that is the shim size. i guess maybe the bearings threw the depth off cause my backlash was 0.09 which is within spec

the biggest pain in the **** is getting the stupid differential back in but i'd rather do that than let it sit installed wrong.

i'd say that this job requires some special tools and is not easy but doable

after i determine if i need a different pinion shim i'll redo it and then post all the pics... won't be till nest week though good thing it's not my daily driver

definitely faster and i can let go of the clutch and it won't stall easily.
my shim size was too small by the mesh pattern i have a feeling i might be able to use the orginal shim. once i get it setup right i'll post the rest... don;t wanna do a write up on how not to setup your differential correct
