Question I'm puzzled

Back in June I had to have a broken crankshaft replaced along with all of the valves do to them being bent. So the heads were off but the pistons were not removed, car went back to stock form motor wise after the supercharger was removed. So today I decide to get ready to do an oil change after only have driven the car a total of 1046 miles since June when the motor work was done, so I pull the dipstick out to check the oil level before I start the oil change and there is no oil on it wtf! so I check it again thinking I did not insert the dipstick all the way down, again no oil on the stick i'm thinking the shop that did the work forgot to put oil in the motor (I drove the car 1046 miles already in a 4 month period). I raise the car, remove the oil drain plug and surprise there is oil draining out but only 3 1/2 qts. which means that I was 2 1/2qts. low. I checked every where under the car for any signs of leaks and nothing and I don't think i'm burning oil from what I can tell, no blue smoke no smell am I missing something or maybe the shop didn't add enough oil.
Any thoughts.

They might have not added enought but I would thoroughly go underneath check everything out and also I would pull one spark plug just to make sure it doesnt have oil on it....

they didn't prime it (much), or they measured the level before priming.

they were just in a hurry?

after engine work I prime without filter - until oil comes out oil filter inlet, then add filter, then continue priming pump til I see oil coming through the distro shaft or lifter valleys. I need to see oil going everywhere.

Then I recheck oil level
Then I complete the build, idle engine, check for leaks and problems, then check level again.

I don't wait 500 miles... I might even change oil after 100-200 miles.

Or sooner if I found something like you did.

Maybe you were running on engine rebuild lube and a smidgen of oil

God that's scary

How is it you weren't aware you were low? I'd have checked the oil level before leaving the shop, then again the next day and the next and so on. I don't trust any place to do that kind of work without watching things like a hawk. Being low on oil should have been detectable long before 1046 miles and 2 1/2 quarts went by.

There were really no signs of it being low. I just really haven't been paying too much attention to the car with just having a new baby a few months ago.
