If you are a car dealer, banker or know alot about buying/selling cars - I'd appreciate some help. I'm considering buying a car from a guy in Tennessee, I live in Pennsylvania. I don't know the guy other than talking to him on the phone. I've done some homework, checked carfax and thus far everything checks out.

The car has a lien on it and he has to sell the car to pay it off. So my question is basically what are the mechanics of doing this?

I feel like its a catch 22 - I don't want to give him a check until he gives me the title. But he can't give me the title until I give him the check and it clears so he can pay off the loan. What are my options for dealing with this?

If need be I can go to Tennessee, but I don't want to sit around there waiting for checks and liens to clear...and I don't want to take many thousands of cash with me.

PS - my apologies this isn't strictly Mustang related. I've been around here a while, put a lot into this forum and received a lot in return. So I'm hoping for a little lattitude if this seems off subject. Besides, its probably useful info for anyone looking to buy a car across state lines.
