Gear Install

Install Kit
I'm not sure what's included in the kit, but I was quoted $500 for a gear install. That included all the necessary parts they would need fluid, shim, new bearings/bushings or whatever. I thought that seemed high from what I read on here, but since I didn't have to buy an install kit, it seemed like a good deal to me. Plus you can't beat a dealer warranty for an upgrade part.

What's the deal with this breakin period? How is that even needed?
Think about it. Does Ford take your car and roll it off the assembly line then drive it around for 500 miles carefully breaking it in with heat cycling? Ofcourse not. So why then, are the differentials just fine in the cars you buy right off the lot? Half those things have been rodded around on test drives already for that matter. Very few customers heat cycle and baby the car like that right after buying it.

The $500 was for the install kit, and the labor. That also included recalibrating the car with the new gearing for the speedo. The only thing I supplied was the actual FRPP 4.10 ring and pinion gear. Also the ford racing girdle cover which they installed at no charge. Which btw the rear girdle looks so nice the only time I get to admire it is while washing the car, that's a shame

yes 500 is nomal for install, you can get it done for less but dont mess around with a sop you dont know. do one with a written warranty for whine and howl. also yes the factory does not heat cycle or flush but rears go all the time from factory. my dads jeep has gone through 2 rear and 1 front diff in 35000 Kilometers. first was at 15000 so yes just because it hasent been properly cycled doesnt mean it will die it just means it wont be as hard. The gears you want and paid extra to have installed you want to do everything to make sure they last. its cheap insurance to harden your gears.
