Do you have a link to Ford claiming that the Taurus will be a luxury car? First off, the Taurus is no longer a mid-sized car, it replaced the 500 which is a full sized car.
Most every model line that does not have a serious performance enthusiast following (and virtually every mainstream "flagship" model) is headed that way. They may still have decent performance, but the whole character of the cars says "luxury" instead of "sport" or "competition".
Too many people want more gadgets and less involvement with the task of driving (dare I suggest that driving might be fun in and of itself?). For the most part the mfrs are simply following the $.
