I had a very fine scratch (about 4 inches long) in my windshield (drove me nuts!)...I looked around and I found a local "Windshield Doctor" in my area who used a new glass polishing system (which cools the windshield while polishing) and they removed my scratch without any distortion in the windshield...cost: $80 and about an hour's worth of work. I watched the entire operation...had to take it to their home (garage). My stang was covered with plastic drop cloths (and a square cutout on the windshield where the scratch was) and every 5 mins or so they would wipe off the polish and I would check it from inside the car while they would shine some light into windshield. I was very satisfied with the work. The scratch simply disappeared. I then drove down the street (looking way ahead) to ensure there wasn't any distortion and there was none. But remember it must be a very light scratch...if it's too deep you will have no other option but to replace the windshield (which I ended up doing a year later due to a rock chip in my line of vision). Remember, the cooling process keeps the windshield from distorting!
This is the system they used: GLAS-WELD...fantastic system...

raubt, call around to the small windshield repair outfits in your area and ask them if they use GLAS-WELD...if you call the big ones they just want to sell you a windshield...after all that's how they make their money.

Your insurance company will pay to have it fixed without you paying the deductible. They would rather pay that than replace the windshield.

As soon as you fix it, you will get a rock chip and so on and so on.......
