I talked to the guy that is probably the most qualified gear installer in CIncinnati, ASE certified. He has been to factory school to set up rear ends. He tells me that he can't GUARANTEE no whine with any ratio above 3.73. He says my '06 GT 'vert PROBABLY will be quiet, but he can't guarantee it, even with FRPP gears (which is all he uses). He says it is possible to have a slight whine. I appreciate his honesty.
I can't see changing to 3.73 from my OE 3.55s, just wont be enough of an improvment.
I don't race, but I want it to be kick a$$ from light to light.
I'm still agonizing. What's a guy to do?
4.10's...and don't look back. They are VERY streetable if you're easy on the throttle.

The installer who put my gears in told me that as long as I was a healthy number of miles below 30K, that my bearings hadn't worn to my gears, and not only would I NOT have to worry about having the bearings replaced, but also that the gears wouldn't whine because of the lack of bearing wear.

Now I'm not sure how many miles you have on your '06. Your guy might be warning you about whine because either: your bearings have to come out, OR, you may be close enough to the 30K threshold that the bearings might be worn enough to cause whine, without the bearings having to be changed.

HOWEVER, I can't say for sure if the replacing of the bearings increases your chances of experiencing whine (and subsequently damage to your gears). That might be something to bring up next time you talk with your installer.

My installer made me feel comfortable knowing that with only 11,5xx on the car, I should have no problems. He took a test drive and experienced no problems, and I have had no problems in the 75+ miles since the install.

Yeah then you might have an exponentially more difficult experience...well your tech might.

An option for you would be to check out newtakeoff.com. They sell full 8.8" rear ends with gears (3.73's and 4.10's included) already installed for ~$900. Unbolt your old axle and rear, and just bolt the new one on.

It's a very expensive route, but you'd essentially be guaranteed a trouble-free experience, as I believe these rear ends are assembled at the factory using Ford Motor Sport parts (FRPP?).

I am hearing more and more that 4.30's are the way to go with manuals if you are staying NA.

Thoughts?

Its the route i went and i have no regrets. With my 20"s my tire height is about an inch and a half taller than stock. Meaning my old 3.55s were reduced to about 3.31s at the wheels. The car was slower and had lost a fair amount of torque. So installing 4.10s would have only given me about a 3.90 ratio at the wheels, which would have been fine if i had a blower, but my car is staying na. So 4.30s were a no-brainer for me. The torque and accelleration is great! And highway rpms are fine too, about 1800 at 55 and 2250 at 65. I actually get better overall gas mileage than before.
