I'm looking for the link, but can't find it now. I researched this when I first tinted my car (I live in PA). You can be ticketed in any state irregardless of where your car is registered.

It's no different than any other law when you think about it. Speeding, running a red light, running a stop sign. The law is the law in that particular state, and living outside of a state does not allow for breaking of the law.

If I can find the link I'll post it, but yes you can get a ticket out of state for window tint.

I'm not finding the link I mentioned above. I did find a few guidelines however that police are supposed to follow.

Basically they can enforce tint laws based off safety without consideration to where the car is registered. If their judgement is such that your tint is too dark to be deemed "safe" then they can write a citation. It's easier for them too if it's aftermarket tint, since the car manufacturers tint within guidlines.

I have 15% tint all around on my car. Have had it that way since the first weekend after bringing the car home. I have only received one citation for the tint in the 3 plus years of owning the car. I was speeding on the PA turnpike. When stopped I was honest with the cop, and apologized for speeding. His exact words were, "I appreciate you being honest with me and not giving me a load of crap. I'm only going to cite you for the window tint." To that I said, "thanks". I'll take a window tint ticket any day over a moving voilation that carries points, and increased insurance.

If you do decide to tint your windows, just be smart in the event you are pulled over. Lower your windows well before they approach the car, and if it's night time turn the lights on so they can see inside and know that you're not some nut carrying a gun and getting ready to shoot them. A little respect goes a long way towards avoiding be bothered by "illegal" window tint.

here in California, they can ticket you for ANYTHING lol

it is legal to have whatever tint you want in the back but on the front windows and windshield the limit is 75% (75%light can pass through)

i wanted 15% on the rear and was going to do like 50% on the fronts but i figured 50% is illegal anyway so lets just do 15 all round

i roll my windows down when i pass cops and when i got pulled over the cop didnt say a thing about my lack of front plate, window tint, radar detector or anything

Jersey cops HATE TINT! Can't pass inspection with it either. It has to be factory installed to be legal.

Sort of... it is a safety issue so it becomes murky, but there are federal laws and guidelines in place stating that states aren't supposed to burden interstate commerce by imposing different safety standards on out-of-state vehicles at the state line, where the out-of-state vehicles comply with their own state and federal laws.

I can tell you the legal answer. No you can not get a ticket for anything that is legal in your state of registration no matter where you are. Some states do not require car insurance so I can not enforce Louisiana insurance laws if you are registered Mississippi. The only way you can be given a ticket in one state if you are registered in another is what is called a "compact state." That is basiclly an agreement from one state to enforce the laws of another and vice versa. That mainly applies to insurance though. Just my professional opinion, well not an "opinion" but legal standpoint from the fuzz. Hope this helps.

Oh and BTW do cops by you really write a tint ticket without another violation? We use tint as the probable cause to stop to check you out and if everything checks you go on your way.

I will say this. I have 5% tint all around, with the front windshield tinted also with 50% tint. It's pretty effing dark.........limo tint is what they call it. I have my mustang registered in PA but live in MD. I have gotten pulled over in MD and VA, both giving me warnings. VA even went to the extreme and used that tint calculating tool on my window and it registered at 2% and still let me go. Being in the military and being a chick might help with that one. I rarely go to PA, but when I do I am well aware while I drive as to where the cops are, and will roll down the window if I see one. It's been 3 years now with no problems.

It's a risk if you are willing to take it. The shop that did my work gave me a warranty and said if I had any issues with the law they would remove my tint and replace it for free. I think if you go with 20% or 35% like you suggested, you should be fine.

My family is loaded with cops, you cannot get ticketed in another state if registered in a different. You can get pulled over and prolly will.

Side note: Some states can enforce tint laws. Florida can...i know that for a fact. But there is not alot of them.
