Default Mustang Modifications

I'm sorry that I'm a noob at all this. But everytime I log in and read the posts I always see something about 4.10 gears or something along that line. Can someone please explain in detail what that is? And also, what are the essential upgrades when I get my mustang?

We all start somewhere...the 05-09 was offered (from the factory) with 3.31 gears (normal) or 3.55 gears (California Special and some others) or 3.73 gears (only Bullit, I believe)...Many people go with a taller gear, 4.10 to get off the line quicker (not eally a gear expert, but I believe the taller the gear the quicker you get in to the car's powerband)...Experts please chime in...As for the second question, essential upgrades...The world is open, but the first thing most will ask is what do you want to do with the car? Track, autocross, street, ect. and how serious (both time and $$$) you want to get.

Good Luck

Hey man...we all started somewhere. I'm sure someone will chime in with more than what I can give you. But 4.10 (or you might see 3.73, 3.55, 3.31, or 4.30) is your final drive line ration. Your transmition feeds into your rear end. It's the gear that's in your rear end that transfers the power from the tranny to your tires. Without getting too complicated the higher the gear number the faster the rear tires will spin up...if that makes sense to you. Higher gears accelerate faster.

Different people have different opinions of what might be considered essential...but here is a basic list of bolt on mods starting with the easier ones going to the more advanced ones.
Tune
Cold Air Intake
Underdrive Pullies
Charge Motion Delete Plates
Full Exhaust
Intake Manifold
Throttle Body
Cams
SUPERCHARGER/TURBO
FULLY BUILT ENGINE

These are basic perfomance parts...of course these would also need other parts to help support them such as clutches, fuel support, etc...

The higher the number the more mechanical advantage you gain, the more power the car can put through the tires. The trade is your loosing top speed, but unless your trying to be geared to go 200+, its not a issue. Great mod.

The rest of the upgrade process is really up to your wallet. 90% of people start with 3 basic mods, you can do it all for under 1k. Cold air intake (CAI,) Tuner (with tune,) and some mufflers.

The CAI and Tune will really wake the car up and feel more alive, where as the mufflers get you the sound everyone wants. As to what muffler exactly to get, again thats personal preferance, I recomend going on you tube and see what you like. Most will tell you Boomtubes are hard to beat for the price. Good luck!
