There is one born everyday....
Subs in the doors is just wrong.
Even the OEM "door subs" were just
mid bass drivers.
Bass is omnidirectional and subs belong in the trunk
in a sealed/ported enclosure, not in the doors in a
free-air configuration.

Not.
Fair enough. Are there any mid-bass drivers available to fit into that area and hook up to the Shaker 500?

Yes there are. They come from Ford as a factory option with the shaker 500 abd 1000.

It all how you cross them over that makes them subs or mid bass drivers.
Fair nuf?

Yep, was wondering if that's where you were heading. I've been thinking about getting in there and installing some caps at some point; less door rattle, more "sound", especially since the 12" sub in the trunk handles the deep stuff!

The 'caps' would be so big that the internal resistance would be detrimental to the mid-bass.
An active 24dB/Octave high pass filter would be needed before the
amplifier in the low level domain like the shakers do....

Okay, so active rather than passive. Since you're now treading a bit beyond my knowledge, care to suggest a brand/model of such an active crossover?

I'm looking at buying the door subs also, but if there's a better alternative I'd like to hear it.

Alpine or JL or the like. Bout $300 - $500 for a good one....
Visit Crutchfield.com and get the 1-800 # and call one of their sales reps for more buyers info on the subject.
Thats what they get paid for and they are really nice to boot....
