Money is one the most replacable objects there is. It is created and obtained, simply to given away. You can't take it with you, so you might aswell spend it on what makes you happy.

We do it to make our cars uniquely "ours."

"It's what I want to do". Period. End of story.

Otherwise,
Ask them to put a price tag on the value of your satisfaction with the car over the length of time that you have it, and perhaps your satisfaction with life over the same period of time. If they can come up with anything at all that's reasonable (which they may not be able to do), have them compare that number to the mod expense.

Who knows - you might just end up liking the car enough to keep it beyond 4 - 5 years. What does that do to it all?

Modify with care and you may get away with making that mod only once . . . when something breaks, if it's something that you were going to modify anyway, the mod cost goes down . . .

Man, I didn't expect this big of a response. Thanks, everyone, for your words of encouragement. I knew I could count on all of you to make me realize that my baby's not a waste of money.

Just to spite my sister, I got new wheels/tires today.

She is totally correct! It is a waste to put money into a car for the sake of transportation. You will never get anything more for it really. Buuuutttt, what if its more than JUST a car? I consider my car my hobby, I LOVE driving it, and a good stress reliever. Who comes out a head in their hobbies? Think of it like fishing. You got a boat, rods, reals, upkeep, fishing license, boat permit, and on and on. You've already got your car for transportation and paying all the fees/taxes anyhow, so why not throw a lil more into the mix and indulge in the glory of loud pipes, screeching tires, and going fast? I'm not an investor, I'm a thrill seeker.

I generally do not mod in the normal sense of the word. What I do is buy the newest Mustang or I am 1-2 years behind the times. Every new generation of Mustang is better in every aspect ie better interiors better/more hp/tq etc. This means I eat depreciation but to me it is no different than modding a item that depreciates.

I bought a "regular" car. I mod it to make it "my" car.

I took a plain F-150 FX4 and make it a 100% custom version I liked...I have a Expedition I'm going to make into a Harley Davidson Expy clone.

why not
