Most come pre-broken in to an extent, and some even limit your power until 50+ key cycles. Not sure where the mustang falls. After a few hundred miles have some fun.

I don't know what the 2011 manual says, but my 05's manual specified to vary the rpm's as much as possible during the initial 1K miles to properly break in all of the moving mechanical components. It also said the worst thing is to drive at a steady rpm for an extended period, e.g., driving at a steady speed during a long trip. It also mentioned to do some occasional spirited(4-5K rpm) accelerations, and not go WOT until after 1K miles.
I followed this procedure, and my GT runs like a raped ape, gets 27 mpg on trips, and does not use a drop of oil between changes.

There are a million threads on this and no definitive answer.

Sounds about right.

Exactly.

My advice is don't drive steady but vary speeds and rpms often. Occasional hard accelerations but not to red-line and then sharp let-offs of the throttle. And do an early oil change.

Unfortunately, I had signed up for, and paid for, a track day at Mosport months prior to buying the car. How'd I know I would get a new car just before the event. I mean, what could I do? I had no choice. What would you have done? Exactly my point. 300 kilometers.

Cheers.

I wonder if varying the rpms for the first 1000 miles actually helps the engine or helps the computer tell the car how to run.

Acceleration, deceleration cycles when ever I get a break in traffic for the first 50 miles. Basically 3rd gear 20-80-20 repeat starting with moderate acceleration and getting progressively heavier while allowing it to decelerate in gear at high vacuum. The idea is to force the rings out against the walls to hasten ring seating. After the first 50 miles I drive it normally including the occasional full throttle 0-80 mph blast. I do try to wait at least 200 miles before the strip and would likely want 500 miles before open tracking.

Not arguing whether my way is right or wrong. It works for me. If you could see a new Corvette go through the acceleration / brake test at the end of the assembly line you would cringe. Basically get it up to 80 as quickly as possible and stand it on its noise.

Since my post was at the end of the first page it seems a lot of skipped it. Please see post 10 and read motomans page on the subject. It's still your call but there some good information there on the subject.

I went through the same thing with my new baby and did all kinds of research, including looking in the manual after I bought it ... [break in period, what break in period?]
After all was said and done, the only thing I did was keep it under 6000 rpm for the first 1000 miles and never kept it at the same rpm when on the highway.
