Most automotive stores can pull codes for you, autozone is the first to come to mind.

that is the code you get when the gas cap is left off/loose

clear the code and keep driving. if the code comes back I'd worry about it. The fuel system basically does a pressure test when you start the car.

if the test doesn't pass, you get the Evap Leak code

The EVAP is the gas cap if im not mistaken, my last car (2006 GT) had a dried out gasket and sometimes would cause this randomly. However i never check the code. I simply put a little Petroleum Jelly on the seal and it never came back. If anyone knows for sure what the code is i would be interested to hear it but i it sounds like you need the extremly over priced gas cap seal or a $3 can of Vasoline.

My girl friend did me a favor and filled up my tank after she borrowed my Mustang for a couple hours. I got it back with a "check engine light". Sure enough I looked at the gas cap and it was not screwed on tight - problem solved, light went out after the next trip with the car. I did not pull the code however.

The gas cap seal is actually a red split O ring and it will slip off the cap. Rather than buy a new gas cap, you could try a standard black O ring in its place. Typically std. O rings are made from Buna N (Nitrile) rubber, which is good material for use in gasoline service.

Do they charge to do this? I asked a Firestone to plug into OBD2 in a Toyota that was throwing a code, and they said it would cost $75 just to plug in.

If Autozone is free to plug in, then I will go there for now on for any thrwon codes.

Yeah, they do it for free. Usually they have a sign up but you can just ask them.
