There has to be more to that Lake Story. When the tech started it, assuming the car was in gear and the e-brake was not pulled, wouldn't the car immediately stall? At most it would lurch forward a small bit, but it should not take off into a lake...

If the car lurches forward and actually 'catches', an EFI engine is far more resistant to stalling than a carbureted engine. Don't forget that 1st gear is a 3.38:1 reduction, times an axle ratio of at least 3.31. FWIW, the car will move on just the starter motor with what appears to be little difficulty (never mind how I might know this).
