First clay bar experience WITH PICS
I couldnt find the link anywhere so I took a pic for you. The green is the micro fiber, the white is the terry cloth, and the black is the foam pad. I also have out swirl-x which in my opinion did nothing, ultimate compound, and some glaze my uncle gave me.
swirl X is good. it is what you would use after Ultimate Compound to remove any haze or micromarring left behind by the heavy cut stuff..thats why he thought it didnt do anything..its not really made for swirls. as for those pads..I am really not sure what to say to use..How do they feel..is the yellow one stiffer then the rest..
The yellow is the microfiber, and yeah I guess you can say it is a little stiffer than the others, but feels softer than the foam. The softest out of the bunch is the terry cloth (white one) and when I used it on my 3d500 spoiler that had swirls, it took them right out with the ultimate compound. Would the foam be to harsh on the paint with the compound? I used the terry cloth and it seemed to work fine.

I have washed mine 4 or 5 times since I got it in July and I had noticed some gritty feeling aftewards and a few very light swirls. Got a clay kit and was going to try it out. But I washed it first then used Klasse All in One by hand just to see how it worked and it left a glassy finish and took all the gritty stuff off. I will use the clay in the spring when it warms up. Will also take care of the swirls with the Porter Cable then also. Previous owner really kept it nice (thanks Shella!).
What I usually do with compound or any other wax/polish setup is to apply the product with a microfiber pad, then use that to get it worked in to the paint, just some medium pressure orbiting motion back and forth and then up and down over the area, then once you only have a semi-haze left and can't clearly see the product on there anymore I use what autozone calls their "polish" line of microfiber cloths. I would assume it feels close to terry cloth but it's crazy soft and I use this to fully remove the product from the paint.
Only pain is that when you're doing a whole car this way #1: This actually tires my arms out and #2: You need at least 2 or 3 of the polish towels IMO to get through the whole car without leaving any product on
Also I know where you're coming from grabber, I'm a big newbie to detailing as well. I now get made fun of for it since I have wayyyy too many products on my shelves in the garage and my mom laughs at me for how much time I spend keeping my car pretty lol. You'll get the hang of it though! I managed to after only a couple months of playing with different ideas and things. Personally I pride myself with sticking to hand application right now. It feels good to work your arms a little while also really bringing the shine out in your stang
grabber blue is one beautiful color

Oh I know xD I saw somewhere around here you posted a picture of all of your supplies and you definitely have me beat. Although at the rate I'm going I'm right behind you lol. I remember one of my friends dad when I was younger had a shelf about 15 feet long with all of his different products side by side and I always admired it hah, he took care of his BMW better than his kids hahah
Looks awsome.....what kind of clay bar did you use?
I once used the Mother's Clay bar.......it scratched the crap out of my car (one small area on the roof)....I stopped using it after that......this was just after washing. One thing I did notice...the clay did pick up a lot of black stuff that wasn't visible to the eye. I did just what the instructions stated.....spray lots of the liquid(?) and pull clay in one direction. It put lines/scratches in the clear coat......scared me and I stopped. I don't know what happened? Any advice?
