You can't go wrong with any of the Escorts and BELs and the V1. With regards to Uniden, Whistler, Cobra and others, there are maybe 1 or 2 models in those lines that have passable performance but the bulk of their models are garbage. You get what you pay for.
Okay good, you had me starting to think I was going crazy...or that I was losing my mind after all this time away (11.5 months now).
+1 on the brand names you mentioned. I wouldn't even waste my money on Uniden, Whistler, or Cobra.

Valentine is the best brand. Its expensive, but def worth the money cause you get what you pay for. Don't bother with the yahoo Walmart s h i t brands like Cobra etc.
PS; Should you get stopped by the cops. Stuff the unit in your pocket cause they have grounds to search your vehicle on reasonable grounds but cant search you unless you're under arrest for an arrestable offence. So you'll be okay if you put it deep in your pocket and dont consent to anything of course. Obviously this trick wont work if you have a warrant out for your arrest lol.

As for the second part of your post, I leave my radar detector plugged in on my dash when/if I get pulled over, I have nothing to hide. Unless you live in a place where they're illegal to use you shouldn't need to hide anything. If you read my story earlier in this very thread you'll see that I got off with only a warning after specifically mentioning I had a detector, and the LEO saw it on my dash. If you act like you have something to hide you're more likely to get negative attention in my opinion.

I agree with you 100 percent. I was just offering advice to those who get caught with it in jurisdictions where it is illegal to possess one. Where i live , you would get charged even if the damn thing was inoperable and in your trunk. if its legal, then i would have it hard wired in as well. We have choppers in the sky everywhere here and its hard to beat those with any technology.

Well me personally, if I lived in a place where they were illegal I would get one of the VERY few detectors that are Spectre immune. That limits me to Beltronics/Escort, the Bel STiR Driver, the Escort 9500CI or Redline. I don't condone using a detector in a state that is illegal though, in fact when I drive through VA I put my detector in my glove box. It's not illegal to have, just illegal to use there. Sounds like where you live it isn't quite like that though.

In regards to the second part, its illegal here to even possess one. I believe the fine is 300 bucks and you loose your unit for destruction obviously. I never had the need to use one really. i just use the pass lane as rarely as possible and slow down near bridges and turns on the highway and always stay behind a larger vehicle as much as i can. if one knows how the technology works, there are many loopholes in them and you can dodge them due to knowing where to be to cause the unit to give a misreading.

We're straying from the OP's original request (which has been answered) and are treading on speculation here. Owning and operating a RD with or without any other countermeasures does not imply that you speed. I found after buying my BEL STi Driver that I was speeding LESS.
Buy prudently and based on test info found on sites such as guysoflidar and radardetector.net the same as you would for any other mods you do to your ride.

My car startup procedure: start car...T/C off...Beltronics 995 Vector on highway mode...crank the sound system...ACDC "***** to the Wall"...and no speeding tickets in 5 yrs of owning my GT and now my Snake...enough said about the effectiveness of the 995...
ive never been pulled over for speeding, but if i do im taking the detector down. i feel like that cop could easily use the fact that i have a detector as a reason to give me a ticket instead of a warning bc he believes that i speed all the time
