Default protecting paint

Well after browsing around and reading other people's problems with getting their cars keyed I've started to wonder if there are some ways to help prevent damage to the paintjob. Would it be possible to use some of that 3M clear bra stuff to cover most of the larger surfaces of cars? Would it be effective at all in saving paint if somebody tryed to key a surface that it was covering? Or would the key cut right through because the material is too soft?

3M dosn't make the stuff in sheets for the whole car so you'd have to buy a lot of it and there would be seems, and lines etc. It would look like garbage and it wouldn't stop a delinquent with a key. Just keep a good wax on that thing and pray no one singles you out for a key job.
