Totaled..
There is no reason he couldn't find financing for a $20k car. 18 yr olds finance $20K cars everyday. Hell, I had a mortgage when I was 20. And there is no reason he couldn't find insurance either. Insurance for my Z06 is cheaper than it was for my LS1 Camaro and there are plenty of younger people driving those on their own insurance. He is 18 and can be responsible for his own actions, there is no reason to blame his parents.
Accidents happen, just because he was a young person driving a fast car does not mean it was the stereotypical young kid trying to show off or do something stupid. It could have just been... an accident.
Would you rather him have been driving a larger, slower car with less braking capability that may have caused a higher impact collision?
I don't get all the criticism, mustang0672 I am glad your brother is okay.

Well it only took one time for me, but I ran a 1989 chevy spectrum into the back of a camaro, in the rain.
I blame your parents. No one would have written an insurance policy on him and that car, at least not one he could afford. I doubt anyone would have financed an 18 year old either.
If your parents finance him another vette, well, they be damn stupid!

I think old people look at the generation and see nothing good.
Well - yeah - most of this generation has gone to hell - probably 85% of my generation is f*ing stupid.
BUT - for those of the 15% - we do some pretty impressive things. This summer, I'm putting myself through skydiving school. Next year, I'm getting a CFII rating. This summer I'm getting my CDL.
So they need to stop giving crap.

I would say the current generation is 50 % bad 50% good. The teenage years is the best time to own a sports car as you really have nothing else to pay for. Any teenager working at least 40 hours a week at even minimum wage could still afford the payment and insurance my brother is responsible for.
I'm 17. My first car was an 11 year old F-150 standard cab. Then my mother remembered she owed me bigtime for something I'm not going to get into detail about. We called the agent - insurance didn't go up a dime.
There are some great insurance agents out there. When you insure 4+ cars you tend to get breaks here and there.
As 22 year old driving a sports car, I hate the fact that people presume that mommy and daddy bought my car or that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. When in fact i saved for over a year to make a down payment large enough to fiance my car for short term with relatively low payments. tell your brother to brush off the assumptions people are sure to make and to remember that opinions are like ********, everyone's got one.
Well we just found out today that the car is totaled. They are wanting 10 grand to buy it back so we told them no. They quickly paid off the loan and my brother has a 14k check in his hands now.
