Default 06 Grinding Noise

I've got an 06 Base Mustang that is making a "dry" grinding noise when I accelerate. Specifically it happens from about 10 mph to about 18 mph. After that it seems to be sound normal.

Weather has been surprisingly warm here, I haven't driven on any dirt roads recently.

I'm planning to take it in this afternoon, but what do you think it could be?

Thanks,
Clueless girl

Can you tell where in the car it is coming from? (In general)

Have you had any brake work done recently?

It seems to be coming from the front/engine area. No recent brake work on the car. Car has been pretty flawless lately. Coming on 70k miles soon if that helps at all.

One more question. Manual or auto?

Automatic, looked for a place to put transmission fluid. Apparently there isn't any?

Why would you look to add fluid if you don't even KNOW if the tranny is low? Or if it's the tranny to begin with?

We need more info to help you troubleshoot. Is this noise in a particular RPM range? A specific gear or all? At all throttle positions (light, medium and/or WOT)? Only when cold or all operating temps?

Jeez, Nuke, lighten up. OP said she's a Clueless girl.

If there were a dipstick to check the transmission fluid (there isn't) I'd be looking to check the level and the condition of the fluid. Given the speed at which the grinding occurs, it could be that second gear is causing the problem.

Unhappy

Art161, you're correct. I took the car to my mechanic and he confirmed it is the second gear. He doesn't work on automatic transmissions, but contacted another company that does. It could be up to $3,100.

I'm very disappointed in my Mustang. It only has about 68k miles on it. For an 06 I would have expected it to last quite a bit longer.

Sorry, didn't catch the clueless girl thing...

Very few Stang owners have reported tranny problems although it DOES happen. But I'd certainly call around and get a few estimates. $3k sounds quite high.
