The transbrake is the best option, but plenty of people use the two step set near (but below) the converter stall limit along with line locks for a good launch. It's the poor man's transbrake.

The transbrake used in conjunction with a 2 step works well and that's what it's designed to do. The brake holds the power in the tranny according to your set rpms of the 2 step. When you're ready to launch you release the transbrake and launch. The transbrake locks the converter and hold the tranny at your designated rpms.

My 85 gt had an auto with a transbrake and 5500 stall converter. My 2 step was set at 5500rpms. I would do my burnout with the line lock, stage and hold the transbrake button while bringing the rpms up to 5500 on the 2 step. Then, when I was ready to launch, I released the transbrake button and launched while seeing the sky and holding on.
The 2 step won't cause the car to push through a line lock anymore so then not using one. Mounted on the same switch, they both turn off at the same time. The two step is used to save the tranny too, less power is being made due ignition being changed.

On my 65 the 2 step is set at 3500. I can change it to stall at 5500 or 2000 and the 60 foot and reaction never differ.
