What all do you need to do this? Can you just get the button assembly and get the rest at an auto store, or is it better to buy the oem s2000 kit with a relay?

I guess I just don't understand because in my opinion this is the dumbest and most useless thing I could think of to do to my car.
It's no more useless than a strut tower brace on an '05+ Mustang GT. The handling gains from that are so minute as to be imperceptable. And the start button actually does something.

Does what, start the car? Other than having a pretty red button in your dash what exactly is the point of this?

Yes. Hence the term "start button."

What is the point of having big *** chrome wheels, non-functioning body kits, duck-tail spoilers, hood scoops, tinted windows, etc.? Do you see the point?

Relax People It does about the same as stripes, chrome exhaust tips, hood pins, sequencing taillights, etc...
Looks cool to the owner.
