I think the question is to why go out on something like that.. you brought up the chrome wheels.. thats for looks and good.. but 20 inch chrome wheels with bling bling spinners are a bit much. Also the second part is that you still have to use the key.. which is an extra wasted step. Its like putting a butt gasket on your own toilet at home
I think you mean having to flush with the handle and then push a button to make the toilet actually flush..... but that would be cool have a little red button that says 'FLUSH'

It seems we may have uncovered why Ford didn't install it in the first place. Some like it, some don't. Both sides have valid points. It is cool (opinion). It does do the exact same thing that is already in place (start the car).

But come on, aren't the arguments against racing stripes just as valid? It is cool (opinion). It does do exact same thing that is already in place (protect and seal the body panels). And yes, I do plan to get stripes painted on as well.

Grow up. The guy (or gal) that started the thread didn't ask what you thought. Do you think I should do it? He was asking for help on what to do. It was obvious that he wanted to install it, just needed some guidance. Instead, he got nearly two pages full of wining, opinions, and totally off subject b1tching.

I say good luck. If he wants to install a switch to start his car, I'll help. Once I get the Passive Alarm System figured out enough to do away with having to insert the key and still start the car securely, I'll pass that info along as well.

68to05stang, one problem you will run into is the signal strength of the key transponder. The upscale keyless systems can detect the presence of the correct key from several feet away. The transponder in our keys and the receiver at the ignition can only work within inches of each other.

Exactly... i asked for no opinions. I simply asked for help. If you cant help, shut your trap and save your opinion, I WANT TO INSTALL IT BECAUSE IT LOOKS COOL! I think my next mod will be spinner hubcaps, can someone help me with that? (note my sarcasm)

Anyway thanks to everyone for the help, i greatly appreciate it.

I had thought of that but didn't know what the range was. How did you find what the range is? I was going to have a normal key cut and then try to start the car with the true transmitting key at different distances away from the transponder located in the steering column.

It's just one of the series of problems that will need to be overcome to have a keyless ignition system work reliably and securely. I was going to get my hands on a Corvette wiring diagram to see how their system employs it. From what I've heard, you can start the car with either the key in and turned, the key in and the push button, or just the key in your pocket and the push button. That's really my goal for the push button start. Plus I think (read - my own personal opinion) it looks cool.

My new question is "Why did/do you think it would be cool to put a start button on your car?".
The 05 mustang has that hideous cigarrete lighter plug in a very conspicuous spot. Some buy fancy Stainless plugs from MGW or steeda to replace the ugly black plug from Ford, but it still leaves a totally useless plug in very conspicuous place. Some might argue that the plug might be useful for accessories, but who would really like to have an ugly black cord dangling from the middle of their dash.

Personally, I thint the starter button looks way better then some of the other options and the fact that it is functional is an added plus.

True, it would be bette if it could work securely without having to use the key, but there are many unsurmontable obstacles. Beyond the electrical hurdles required to overcome the transponder issues, there is also a matter of the steering wheel and shifter locks. You need the key to unlock those as well.

I'm happy with my engine start switch. It looks better then the Ford plug and it's a cool toy to play with.

Interesting...

I find a great deal of humor in how such a simple question could inspire such a wide range of emotions out of such a small group of people!

OK to banter.. but please keep your cool so I don't have to start editing or deleting posts!

Now.... Start Button... Personally, since you need the key anyway, I don't see the sense in it. However, I have remote start on my car and I use it all the time - but still have to put the key in before I drive away. GREAT for those cold mornings you want to leave yoru car running at the gas stationg. People give me these crazy looks like they can't belive I left my car running. I can't wait for the day to see some idiot jump in my car thinking he is going to drive away in a free 05' Custom Mustang.

By the way.... My 10HP Go-Cart has a Start Button... and so do my two motorcycles!....

Correct. That is another reason why it would be quite expensive to integrate a true keyless start system in our cars. The button would have to be a multi-stage type (one press for ACC, another press for RUN, another press for START, and yet another press for STOP) and you'd need a solenoid wired to the button that would unlock the steering wheel when the RUN mode is selected and lock it when OFF is selected. Also, the system would have to recognize that if you hold the button down, to go ahead and start or stop the engine.

A true keyless start system is also tied into the brake shift-lock. You have to press the brake for the system to start the engine. What we have is the most basic setup there is. A lot of parts, electronics and engineering go into a real keyless system.

Yup, probably going to be hard to do. But the coolest stuff usually is or else it would be included with the car.

Acutators can be small and powerful (door lock motor), maybe tie it to the alarm system that when activated, the steering wheel is locked? There is acutally a lot of possibilities, just have to use an open mind. I'll give it a try.
