Can you adjust the mileage meter?
Maybe I am searching with the wrong words but there has to be some info on the subject some where?
I just want to know if the miles per gallon gauge/meter can be adjusted to it is at least sort of close to reality.
I have over 10,000 miles on my car and the Average Miles per gallon crept up from 12 mpg to around 24.4 (at the moment) but it usually reads around 22-23 mpg. It stopped getting closer to real mileage some time ago.
Naturally I hand calc it and it is usually from 25.4-27.2.

My Average MPG gauge/meter usually reads some where in the 23.Xs.
Last monday evening I filled up and I decided I would see how good of mileage I could get. Previously I would pencil mileage when I filled up, my worst tank was about 24.7 mpg and my best was around 27.2, and of course most of the time I was some where in the middle (prolly like 25-26 mpg.)
So I started with a fresh full tank on Monday evening and filled up Friday evening. The stang only took 10.2 gallons, I think the gas gauge said I had about 1/4 tank left. I had traveled 295.7 miles since Monday, so I netted 28.99 MPG.
All I did was set my cruise at the speed limit on the freeway and accelerate more gently. I have decided I can coast down hill more as well has coasting up to stop lights/signs. I am starting to think it won't be that hard to actually average 30 mpg. I have noticed a slight increase in MPG even before I started my little experiment, It could be the colder air, less AC and the Amsoil, My guess is that all 3 contribute.
Since I started driving real careful the Average MPG meter/gauge has started creeping up, it was consistently under reporting before. It was hanging down there around 23.xs. This morning it was at 25.1. I gain about 0.1 a day. Now I am wondering if it will ever catch up to my calculated mileage?

You have to reset the MPG each fill up. It is taking an average over time since it was last reset. So if you don't manually reset it then you are looking at what you averaged over the last 10 or so tanks of gas.
I've found that it is pretty accurate on my car. I reset it each time I gas up and when I've done the manual calculation the MPG on the display is always within a tenth of the manual calculation.

I started resetting the MPG display after each fill up and it is more accurate. Though it is consistently under reporting MPG. It typically reads 26.2-26.4 MPG. The last three tanks calculated out like this, 29.0, 30.1, 29.2. So the MPG display is off by at least 2.5 mpg.
