RE: heads
Hi,
Get some prices together from some reputable automotive machine shops. You'll probably find that modifying the stock cylinder heads will not be as inexpensive as you would aniticipate (after machining, valves, springs and spring hardware etc...). Even worse, depending on what power levels you are expecting, they may still lack the capabilities. It would probably be more cost-performance effective to go with aftermarket aluminum heads with the specs you want... Eddy's and TFS heads are a good price and proven to boot! Also, set a goal for your build cause the rule is "bigger is not always better".
Best of luck.

RE: heads
Just like Indy said. You can just about buy a new set of heads for what you will spend on a new set of aftermarket. Even working those stock heads won't get you the performance of a bolt on set of aftermarkets.

Yeah man, I hear you... parts up here don't seem as cheap as they do in the Summit catalogue! LOL.
I got my Eddy RPM's for around $1400.00 + tax. They're the 2.02/1.60 valve ones. The heads are complete. I'm super happy with them.
I think I had a quote of around $750.00 - $800.00 to machine my D0OZ heads, install new stock sized valves (1.84/1.54), new valve guides ect... No porting in that price yet. No valve springs for my application in that price yet either! So you see, even if I spent that and the rest of the money needed to dress those heads, they would still be out performed by a pair of aftermarkets!
The most important thing to do is commit to a performance level, and stick to it! That way you can do it right and do it ONCE! If the stock chunks of iron are going to work for you, than go for it.
Here's a link to a site you may have already seen. I found it to be a helpful guideline. Check it out, and good luck. Let us know how you make out.
