Default RE: Gear Question

I went with the ford racing t-lock and 3.73 gears, also ordered a complete install kit. I had ford dealership do the install, then showed the tech how my sct2 tuner would let me change gear ratio in pcu, to correct the speedo. The ford factory rep told me, that the 3.73's and t-lock are a solid combination used in over a million ranger pickups. If you have your service rep check with ford, they will confirm this. If you can afford the money, 5.5 hours labor for the install at ford, let them do it, I've not had any problems, other than the ford racing gears are pre-honed in, and heat treated to a different spec than the standard truck gears, and with the synthetic gear oil used now, it takes several thousand miles to break in the gears. I had some gear whine, but that was also due to replacing the upper control arm with poly bushings.

Yes there are other differentials out there that are built stronger, but they cost more too. I don't think you will be able to break the 7.5" for d t-lock with a under 300hp engine. Some forum uses, running superchargers on this setup, peaking over 400hp have not had any problems.

You won't be unhappy with the results of this combination. Yes the 4.10's will give you a more power off the line, but if your using the car for a daily driver the 3.73's are a good compromise.

Get a tuner and cold air intake comb package, that will save you some money.

You could also get the parts from salvage yard, gear's and t-lock, you want to look for a 2002-2005 ranger pu with the v6 engine. Most of the wrecked ones should have good diff gears in em. The salvage yards will give you a 90 day warrenty, long enough for a rearend specialist to check em out. A local drive train shop should be about half the cost of the ford dealership instal, around 300 to 400 dollars. The gears and t-lock should be about 1/3 of new prices. You will still need to get a complete install kit, these include bearings, races, shims, bolts, ect.

I spent alittle over $700 at the dealship just for the labor on the install. But I got fords repair warrenty, lifetime

I also used the rear girdle and offset bracket from http://www.rpmoutlet.com/05v6.htm

http://www.rpmoutlet.com/05v6ta2.htm

This is really alot to do at once, so you will want to plan out your upgrades so you don't pay labor twice.

here's a good cold air intake and tuner http://www.rpmoutlet.com/vortech.htm

I used the MMR cold air intake and the SCT2 tuner from http://www.alternativeauto.com/prods...tang_tune.html

Lidio's tunes for the v6 automatic are fantastic, been very happy with the performance.
